A Growing Indie Bookseller Market

The experience indie bookstores create for their patrons is at the heart of long-term sustainability and growth.

More competition. Less Margins.

Most indie bookstores draw from the same catalogs, the same 3 or 4 distributors, the same audiobook distributor, and the same titles, resulting in the same thin margins that don't stand a chance against massive market leaders like Amazon and Audible. The result is a bookseller in a perpetual state of wanting something unique for their readers but affordable in the short term...preferrably free.

Surviving the First Two Years

Indie bookstores that make it past the first two years cultivate a dedicated space for their local communities: the regulars who purchase their morning coffee every Wednesday while browsing staff recommendations or the neighborhood book club who use the couches for their regular Friday evening discussions while enjoying tea and a few snacks from the new pastry nook.

No Risk. All Reward.

These specific needs is where Gabriel started when developing Crown & Coil's Author Reading & Signings offering. A zero-cost of entry provides indie bookstores 0 risk in hosting a Crown & Coil event. No required stock purchases means 0 risk of carrying stock that doesn't move. Multiple night event scheduling can build momentum night after night, leading to larger crowds, longer dwell times, and stronger bonds between bookstore and patrons.

If a bookseller sees Gabriel selling through twenty copies in a single night (average book sales are 15 per event), they can enjoy direct purchasing through Crown & Coil, bypassing shipping delays or damaged books and building a long-term relationship directly with the author on behalf of their patrons.

Never seen in this century.

How does this work?

1. Pick a time that works with your store calendar.

Give your patrons the experience of author engagement, conversation, and performance.

An experienced storyteller and culture theorist, Gabriel provides an in depth source of literary insight, cultural commentary, and a reason for your readers to stay in your store a little longer.

Do you need more than one event? Select up to four nights with Gabriel in your store speaking on historical fiction, his current work, and what it means to be a part of the reading community.

2. Choose to stock or not.

Creating an incredible experience is what matters most to us. No bookseller is required to purchase our titles for an event.

Crown & Coil titles are available directly through us or through Ingram at the same wholesale price.

Booksellers who order through Crown & Coil save time and labor costs with one less inventory order to track, one less shipment that might run late against your calendar, one less box your team needs to open, and one less thing to worry about before the event.

When you order through Crown & Coil, all your books, the display, and the author arrive together. Floor ready and ready to move.

3. The Set Up

We keep it simple. No setup to manage. No logistics to coordinate.

Gabriel arrives with everything needed for the event:

  • A stone carried from his great-grandmother’s home in the desert southwest, with a story of its own
  • A leather chest holding the event's inventory
  • Dried mint, mesquite, and a hint of cedarwood oil, for atmosphere
  • A hand-drawn, framed map of the world from Feed the Gods
  • A wooden bookstand for the display copy
  • Acrylic, postcard-sized stands with collateral displays

All we ask of you is a strong table and a table cloth.

4. Event Night

An evening built around story, conversation, and connection, not a sales pitch.

Every store is different and you know what works best for your patrons. We have a general flow for the evening that is flexible to accommodate what your readers enjoy most:

  • Setup — 30 minutes
  • Sales / Conversation — 1 hour
  • Reading & Signing — 1 hour
  • Sales / Question & Answer— 1 hour
  • Breakdown — 30 minutes

Four hours, start to finish, with two natural windows for browsing and buying before and after Gabriel takes the floor.
